Daddy's Home

I have to start out by saying that, in general, I do not like Will Ferrell as an actor. *GASP* I know, so I may have already been somewhat biased against this movie. However, I do like Mark Wahlberg and Linda Cardellini, so I decided to give Daddy's Home a chance.

I got pretty much what I would expect from most Will Ferrell comedies: some laugh out loud moments, a couple little surprises, and more than a few cringes. Brad (Will Ferrell) is the overly emotional step father of two children. Wanting nothing more than to connect with his new kids, the non-confrontation Brad is thrown for a loop when his Wife's ex-husband, Dusty (Mark Wahlberg), shows up. Fresh out of prison and ready to do whatever it takes to get his family back, Dusty challenges Brad at every turn.

While the dynamic between the two opposing characters created a lot of great comedy and some good laughs, the raunchiness factor was off the charts. I have a hard time watching movies where the main character is repeatedly embarrassed, like Meet the Parents or American Pie. This might be my bias flaring up again, but Will Ferrell on several occasions crossed the line between funny and obnoxiously weird causing multiple cringe-worthy "WTF" moments.

Many of the supporting roles had so much more to offer in this movie! Hannibal Buress (Griff), Thomas Haden Church (Leo), and Bobby Cannavale (Dr. Francisco) were the little surprises that I loved the most. Thomas Haden Church can say the most ridiculous lines with such confidence and charm. His outlandish tales create some funny little moments throughout the movie. Hannibal Buress provided a much needed break from the chaos with his calm comedic delivery, and Bobby Cannavale is a great character actor; while his scenes are exceptionally funny, he has a way of bringing the story back to reality.

Overall, I would give this movie 3 stars out of 5. It has likable qualities, and I did enjoy watching it. I wouldn't buy this movie or rent it again, but if it was on TV or Netflix, I might watch it. I would suggest this to anyone that enjoys Raunchy Comedy or Cringe Comedy. If you like Will Ferrell, you will probably like this movie; although, Daddy's Home is definitely not as amazing as Step Brothers. *COUGH*COUGH* Did I just say amazing?
