The Iron-Jawed Boy | Nikolas Lee

Ionikus Reaves is a Caller - a person that can control an element - and Ion can manipulate the wind. At the beginning of the story, Ion is ripped from his family and forced into servitude. He soon learns that he holds more power than he ever dreamed possible.

The Iron-Jawed Boy is filled with EPIC battles between Gods, Guardians, and all sorts of amazing fantasy creatures. It is a combination of many different ideas that join to form an intriguing new world.

Overall, I genuinely enjoyed reading this story. I really adore all the different characters, and the story line flowed perfectly. I love Ion's journey of self discovery, and his battle with self acceptance. I can relate, and I think many others will enjoy that aspect as well. One of my favorite facets of this story is the contrast between innocence, naivety, greed and power. Ion himself is just one example of this; he is young, naive and innocent, but Ion is filled with so much power that it often threatens to take him over. These were some of my favorite scenes to read! The only negative thing I have to say, is that I think some of the twists were a little too predictable; too many hints were given along the way, and that surprise factor, that impact was not as great as it could have been.

I would recommend this book to everyone who enjoys fantasy and adventure! It is definitely a great middle grade book, but one that I think older readers will enjoy as well (considering that I am older and definitely enjoyed this book). I look forward to Book 2 and finding out where Ion's journey will take him next!

I received a digital copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.
